Nov 28, 2014 · I've got 3 LB7/LLY broken cranks here. They all do it, but the LB7/LLY cranks have a little more weight to them so they are preferred if you're building the motor. Not sure if it makes a difference which crank you have, I did go with a used LLY crank that was mag tested in my LMM though.

its the operator fault. he is over stressing the engine. when the crank breaks on the 5-6 rod, its always a misuse of the engine. The operator over stress the engine. if its the 1-2 rod, the operator uses way too much the engine brake, or its running the motor at high rpm without load. I replaced the crankshaft seal behind the harmonic balancer, replaced the bolt, torqued it to 74ftlbs and then added 90 degrees. Put it all together and fire it up. Within a few seconds the harmonic balancer bolt has backed itself off. I just got done with an engine for a guy that he broke the crank on- would start and idle fine, had throttle until about 2200rpm and then would start cutting out and running erratic. Not sure about Duramax, but BBC should have forward thrust load applied to the crank flange (say 100 lbs) with 1/2 thrust load (say 50 lbs) applied rearward to the main thrust cap prior to and during initial tightening of the main thrust cap fasteners.
